DUNNELLON AND OCALA, FLA. — Ocala-based Edwards Construction Services is eyeing a second quarter 2010 completion of two classroom school wings for the School Board of Marion County. Starting this fall, the firm will construct a 10-classroom wing at Romeo Elementary School in Dunnellon and a 12-room expansion at Evergreen Elementary School in Ocala. Included in the projects are construction of new play areas and multi-purpose courts.

HOUSTON — The University of Houston has selected the Austin, Texas, office of Hardin Construction Co. for a new $50 million undergraduate housing project. The facility, which will be situated on the university’s central campus, will consist of a seven-story, 300,000-square-foot residential building. It will feature 1,172 beds. Resident advisor offices, a social lounge, a computer lab, multi-purpose rooms, a fitness center and a convenience store. Construction will begin this month, with completion expected by the start of the fall 2010 semester. The new facility will accommodate incoming freshmen and is part of the university’s goal to increase the number of students living on-campus. The university eventually plans to house the entire first-year class on campus. According to university officials, this new project marks the first time since 1970 that the university will have a residential building dedicated specifically to freshmen.
DULUTH, MINN. — Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. has been selected to serve as construction manager for the new $65 million terminal for Duluth International Airport. Phase I is expected to break ground July 1, pending approval by the Federal Aviation Administration. This phase, which is slated for completion at the end of the year, will include site preparation and infrastructure work. Phase II will include the construction of the terminal. Completion of the project is expected in late 2011. The project is expected to apply for LEED certification. The airport will remain open during construction.
TUSTIN, CALIF. — The Tustin Unified School District, along with construction manager Barnhart Inc., has broken ground on the $1.5 million renovation of the Tustin High School quad in Tustin. Located at 1171 El Camino Real, the 30,500-square-foot outdoor area will connect campus buildings. Renovations include new entryways, walkways, benches, overhangs, landscaping and a clock tower. NTD Architecture provided design services for the project, which is scheduled for completion in December.
PLYMOUTH, IND. — The Community Resource Center for Marshall County Inc. has received funding to assist in the construction of a new county services facility, located in Plymouth. The organization received a low-interest $2.39 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the construction of the new Community Resource Center. The project will be located at the site of the former Fulton-Marshall County Co-op, which will be demolished by the end of June. The new 30,000-square-foot facility will provide a central location for several Marshall County social service agencies. Groundbreaking is expected to occur in September, with completion slated for the second quarter of 2010. COLUMBUS AND BAINBRIDGE, GA. — The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia is overseeing the development of two wellness projects totaling more than $50 million. The campus of Columbus State University in Columbus is the location for a 96,000-square-foot student wellness center. The $29 million development encompasses a gym, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a banquet hall and a climbing wall. An 80,000-square-foot facility will be built on the campus of Bainbridge College in Bainbridge. The $25 million project will include a 2,500-seat gym, a food court, administrative space, classrooms and a book store. Jones Lang LaSalle will manage the projects, which should be complete by October 2010.
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — The Army Corps of Engineers has selected Mortenson Construction to build the new Company Operations Facilities (COF) at Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs. Located adjacent to the 47th Infantry Division Tactical Equipment Maintenance Facilities (TEMF), the $70 million complex comprises six buildings ranging from 55,000 to 89,000 square feet. Designed by the Minneapolis office of LEO A DALY, the project is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification. The COF buildings are designed to accommodate numerous U.S. Army companies ranging in size from 100 to 250 soldiers per company. Each building consists of three distinct elements: Readiness Module, Administrative Module and Covered Hardstand area. PBS&J is providing civil design services; U.S. Engineering and McGrath are providing mechanical and plumbing design-build services; and Dynalectric and LEO A DALY are providing electrical design-build services.
PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. — The Department of the Navy ¬– Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast has enlisted St. Louis-based Walton Construction Co. to add a fourth military barracks to its $78.4 million Marine Corps. Recruiting Depot project. The Parris Island development now includes four, three-story barracks facilities, a headquarters training complex, a physical training circuit and a central mechanical plant. The original project will be complete by October 2010, with the new addition delivering in April 2011.
WINTER GARDEN, FLA. — Clancy & Theys Construction Co.’s Orlando, Fla., office has completed the $2.6 million Braddock Park Athletic Complex for the city of Winter Park. Spread across 20 acres at 13460 Lake Butler Blvd. in Winter Park, the complex includes a 1,200-square-foot concessions building, a 650-square-foot maintenance building, sports fields and a parking lot. Orlando-based Harvard Jolly designed the project.
FORT MYERS, FLA. — The Fort Myers office of Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. will build the first phase of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Fine Arts Building 2. The property will be located near the existing arts building on the university’s Fort Myers campus. The project includes building a 210-seat recital hall, a lobby, classrooms, practice rooms, an instrument storage room and offices. The property will be constructed to LEED standards.
