HOK SELECTED FOR GREEN SCHOOL PROJECT

NEW YORK CITY — The New York City office of HOK has been chosen by the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) to design a new school in Jamaica, Queens. Public School/Intermediate School 48Q will be a 93,400-square-foot school campus that will house pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students. The school will comprise a five-story, L-shaped “Learning Block” building that will house 32 classrooms and a library, as well as a four-story “Activities Block” building that will house an auditorium, a gymnasium and a cafeteria. The $52.5 million project will be one of the first schools in the city designed to meet the New York City Green Schools Rating System, a sustainable building guideline system created by the CSA. Completion of the project is scheduled for September 2011. The new school will be replacing an existing 1930s-era school, which will be preserved and converted into offices for the New York City Department of Education.

STILES CONSTRUCTION MOVES FORWARD ON PUBLIC SAFETY COMPLEX

SUNRISE, FLA. — Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Stiles Construction has broken ground on the 109,000-square-foot Public Safety Complex at 10440 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise. The $30 million property will serve as the headquarters for the city’s police and fire departments. The complex, slated for delivery in March 2011, encompasses a 17,850-square-foot fire station with three apparatus bays, offices, training rooms and a full dormitory. A 4,900-square-foot energy plant will also be constructed adjacent to the property. Winter Park, Fla.-based Architectural Design Group provided design services.

MORGAN/HARBOUR FINISHES WATER QUALITY ASSOCIATION EXPANSION

LISLE, ILL. — Woodridge, Ill.-based Morgan/Harbour Construction has completed a 7,000-square-foot expansion and renovation to the 21,000-square-foot Water Quality Association headquarters. The property is located at 4151 Naperville Rd. in Lisle. The work included the addition of 12 challenge water tanks, an expansion of the filter testing room and a renovation of lab space. Morgan/Harbour and Harris Architects provided design services.

MYRTLE BEACH STUDENT HOUSING PROPERTY SOLD FOR $6.18 MILLION

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — CW Capital has sold the 144-unit Campus Pointe student housing property to Preiss Co. for $6.18 million. The complex is located at 110 Chanticleer Village Dr., near the campus of Coastal Carolina University, in Myrtle Beach. Campus Pointe is currently 50 percent occupied. Jim Sewell and Steve Mack of Hilton Head, S.C.-based Coastal Apartment Advisors represented the seller.

$41 MILLION ASTROPHYSICS CENTER OPENS AT CALTECH

PASADENA, CALIF. — The $41 million Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena has opened as part of the institution’s $120 million modernization program. The 100,000-square-foot building is the second of five projects across campus that are part of the program. Designed by Morphosis, The Cahill Center was constructed to achieve LEED Gold status. Sustainable features include exterior panels that reflect heat, light wells that allow sunlight into basement laboratory spaces, occupancy sensors for lighting and drought-resistant landscaping.

DMR ARCHITECTS COMPLETES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION

LYNDHURST, N.J. — Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.-based DMR Architects has completed the $2 million renovation of the Jefferson Elementary School annex, located on New York Avenue in Lyndhurst. The building, which was formerly occupied by the Knights of Columbus, will now house kindergarten, first grade and second grade students for the school. The renovation will also allow for the accommodation of children with special needs, including the installation of an elevator for ADA access. In addition, the building’s existing kitchen was upgraded, as were the nurse’s office, the main office and the building’s façade. The project was funded by a joint venture between the town and the school district.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY FOR V.A. CLINIC AT SEAGATE CORPORATE CENTER

OCEANSIDE, CALIF. — New York-based Rockefeller Group is developing an 80,000-square-foot, built-to-suit outpatient client for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at Seagate Corporate Center in Oceanside. The two-story facility is located north of Oceanside Boulevard. Smith Consulting Architects is providing architectural services along with Raymond Fox & Associates, which is serving as consulting medical architects and providing interior design services. Reno Consulting is serving as general contractor for the project.

CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE FOR GREENSPUN HALL AT UNLV

LAS VEGAS — Clark Construction Group LLC has completed the construction of Greenspun Hall, a 120,000-square-foot facility located at the University of Las Vegas in Las Vegas. The $93.7 million facility will house the College of Urban Affairs. The building has received LEED Gold certification. Dallas-based HKS and New York-based Robert A.M. Stern Architects provided architectural services for the project. Additional project partners and subcontractors include KHS&S Contractors, Helix Electric, Bombard Electric, Southwest Steel Las Vegas, Desert Plumbing, Isaac Construction Company, Century Steel, U.S. Mechanical Contractors, Giroux Glass, and Frazier Masonry Corp.

JE DUNN TO REPAIR REEVES COUNTY DETENTION CENTER

PECOS, TEXAS — Kansas City, Mo.-based JE Dunn Construction has been selected as construction manager for repairs to the Reeves County Detention Center, located in Pecos. More than half of the complex, which consists of 18 buildings housing 2,400 inmates, was burned in a riot that occurred earlier this month. JE Dunn will complete demolition work, renovations and repairs, and aesthetic upgrades that are estimated to cost $20 million. The project architect is LMD Architects. The construction timetable was not disclosed.

CORE CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — CORE Construction has completed the construction on the replacement of Tom Williams Elementary School in North Las Vegas. Located at 3000 E. Tonopah Ave., the project included the demolition of the existing school and construction of a new 82,100-square-foot, two-story facility. Las Vegas-based Domingo Cambeiro Corp. provided architectural services for the $21.65 million project. CORE Construction was contracted by the Clark County School District.
