TUFTS BUILDING GOES VERTICAL

BOSTON — Tufts University has started a vertical addition to an existing 10-story building in the School of Dental Medicine in Boston. The 5-story addition will include 95,000 square feet and is expected to meet LEED certification. Two clinical patient floors, expanded simulation lab and teaching facilities, a conference center and administration offices will occupy the addition. Project partners include ARC/Architectural Resources and Shawmut Design and Construction. Completion is slated for 2010.

TEXAS TECH OPENS NEW SCHOOL OF LAW BUILDING

LUBBOCK, TEXAS — Texas Tech University has opened the Mark and Becky Lanier Professional Development Center at the School of Law. The 34,560-square-foot facility, which was designed by Dallas-based SHW Group, features the 130-seat Donald Hunt courtroom; a 300-seat auditorium/classroom; space for the Office of Academic Success Programs, Career Services, Alumni Development and student organizations; and a practice courtroom. Houston-based Vaughn Construction served as general contractor for the $13.6 million project.

FINAL PHASE COMPLETE FOR WOMEN’S VILLAGE

LOS ANGELES — Snyder Langston has completed the development of Catholic Charities/Good Shepherd Center Women’s Village Phase III, a 35,892-square-foot mixed-use building located at 1671 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. The four-story facility features a retail bakery/café, which will provide employment assistance for the residents, an employment and client service center, computer training area, classrooms, conference rooms, and a transitional housing area offering 21 one-bedroom apartments. The new building will provide services to all of Good Shepherd Center’s facilities. Pasadena, Calif.-based Onyx Architects provided design services for the project.

HILLWOOD SELLS 62 ACRES FOR SCHOOL SITES IN SIENNA SOUTH

FORT BEND COUNTY, TEXAS — Hillwood recently sold 62 acres in its 3,827-acre Sienna South community in Fort Bend County to the Fort Bend Independent School District. The site will be used for the development of a high school and an elementary school. Construction on the high school is planned to begin this summer, and completion is expected in August 2010. Johnson Development Corp. is assisting Hillwood by providing the necessary infrastructure, including roads and utilities, to serve the schools.

SMU’S EMBREY ENGINEERING BUILDING RECEIVES LEED-NC GOLD CERTIFICATION

DALLAS — The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded Southern Methodist University’s (SMU) Embrey Engineering Building with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (LEED-NC) Gold level certification. This makes the building, which was built by Turner Construction and designed by Hahnfeld Hoffer Stanford, the only collegiate academic building in Texas to receive this level of certification. The Embrey Engineering Building opened in 2006.

PENTA BUILDING GROUP COMPLETES $4.9 MILLION ATHLETIC ACADEMIC CENTER

RENO, NEV. — The PENTA Building Group has completed the $4.9 million Marguerite Wattis Petersen Foundation Athletic Academic Center at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Silver LEED-accredited facility includes an ADA ramp and new connection combining the new facility and existing Cashell building. Designed by James Mickey of Worth Group Architects, the 8,293-square-foot facility features a masonry and steel structure with a curtain wall system.

$65 MILLION LIBRARY, TECHNOLOGY CENTER OPENS

FONTANA, CALIF. — Heery International has completed Lewis Library and Technology Center, a $65 million civic facility located within Civic Center Park in Fontana. Part of the city’s civic center redevelopment program, the 93,000-square-foot library and technology center houses a collection of more than 142,000 publications, including 7,850 reference, media and periodical items; a 330-seat auditorium; the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children’s Library; public meeting rooms; a homework center with bilingual materials; a Friends of the Library bookstore; a career center; a literacy center with tutoring programs; a 203-computer technology center and a café. The Los Angeles office of RNL Design provided architectural services for the project.

KRAUS-ANDERSON TO BUILD AIRPORT ADDITION

ANOKA, MINN. — Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. has been selected to build the new Fixed Base Operation (FBO) at the Anoka County-Blaine Airport in Anoka. The first phase of construction, which is scheduled for completion in September, will include at least 14,000 square feet of terminal space and 65,000 square feet of hangar space. At full build-out, the project will add more than 250,000 square feet of hangar space. The FBO will cater to the business jet sector, and will be owned and operated by Key Air.

CDS TO DEVELOP NEW RESIDENCE HALL AT MSU

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — Irving, Texas-based Collegiate Development Services (CDS) has been selected by Midwestern State University (MSU) to build a new residential hall on its campus located in Wichita Falls. The student housing complex, which will be situated on 5 acres, will be located on the southwest corner of Louis J. Rodriguez Drive and Midwestern Parkway on MSU’s campus. The three-story property will comprise 96 apartment-style units and feature high-speed Internet access, cable and complete appliance packages, as well as a common student courtyard area. Collegiate Contacting Services (CCS) will serve as general contractor for the project, while Hensley Lamkin Rachel Inc. will provide architectural services.
