TANDEM BEGINS PHASE II OF UNION LEAGUE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB PROJECT

CHICAGO — Tandem Construction has started the second phase of a $4.2 million renovation of the Union League Boys & Girls Club at 2157 W. 19th St. in Chicago. Phase II includes a full remodelling of the original 19th century Club One building. Tandem completed Phase I, the construction of a four-story, 17,000-square-foot annex adjacent to the existing facility, in July. Dating back to the 1880s, Club One once housed a saloon and has been home to the Union League Boys & Girls Club since 1920. Tandem plans to renovate an exisiting gym, build a state-of-the-art technology center and remove an unused swimming pool in the basement to create a multipurpose space. The project is slated for completion at the end of this year.

SKANSKA TO CONSTRUCT NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ANDOVER

ANDOVER, MASS. — Skanska is constructing Bancroft Elementary School, a public school for the town of Andover. The project includes a new 106,486-square-foot building adjacent to the existing Bancroft Elementary School, which first opened in 1969. The new building will accommodate 680 students and will include classrooms, administrative space, a library, gymnasium and cafeteria. Crews plan to demolish the exisiting 65,000-square-foot elementary school. The town of Andover is seeking LEED Silver certification for the school. The project will be built in three phases and is scheduled for completion in November 2014. Symmes Maini & McKee Associates is the architect and Dore & Whittier is the project manager.

MCCARTHY BREAKS GROUND ON $191M WATER FACILITY

CONROE — McCarthy Building Cos. has begun construction on a $191 million project in Conroe known as the San Jacinto River Authority Surface Water Facility, located in Conroe. The construction will include building a raw water intake and pump station, water treatment plant, high service pumping station and storage. The facility is the second largest water infrastructure project in Texas. The project will use the Construction Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) delivery method, which will bring the contractor in early to help the collaborative team develop the most cost-effective solutions for the project. The treatment plant will have a 30 million gallons of water per day capacity. The project is slated for a late 2015 completion.

RENOVATIONS BEGIN AT YMCA'S NEW AQUATIC CENTER

BARRINGTON, R.I. — New England Construction has started renovation on the Bayside YMCA in Barrington, as well as the addition of a new 24,430-square-foot Aquatics Center. New England will renovate 36,000 square feet of existing space for the Greater Providence YMCA. The Aquatics Center will feature a six-lane, in-ground pool, as well as a shallow swimming pool for families. The project will also include a new front desk area, locker rooms and upgrades to the gym. Vision 3 Architects designed the project.

The space serves as Corinthian’s corporate headquarters. Corinthian Colleges was represented by Ronda Clark, Ryan Hawkins and Joe Bevan of Jones Lang LaSalle Orange County.

CPPI COMPLETES $21.7M CLASSROOM

ORLANDO, FLA. — Charles Perry Partners has completed a $21.7 million, 82,280-square-foot classroom at Valencia College at Lake Nona in Orlando. The property is the first building for the new satellite campus. SchenkelShultz Architecture designed the three-story building, which includes academic spaces, teaching laboratories, student services, a book store, library, cafe, Dean's suite and administrative offices.

WORK BEGINS ON $16.5M RENOVATION, EXPANSION OF LONG BEACH H.S.

LIDO, N.Y. — Stalco Construction has started work on the $16.5 million expansion and renovation of the Long Beach High School in Lido. The school is located at 332 Lagoon Drive W. and currently houses 1,400 students. The project will include the construction of a new, 20,000-square-foot addition to the main building, renovation to the existing three-story school and the construction of new outdoor sports facilities. The high school project is scheduled for completion in 2014 and will be completed in 10 phases. In addition to Stalco, the general contractor, the project team includes architect CS Arch; Savin Engineers; Ryan-Biggs Associates; Lewis Engineering; The Chazen Cos.; and HMH Site & Sports Design.

PAINTERS DISTRICT COUNCIL #2 OPENS $3.5M TRAINING CENTER

CHSTERFIELD, MO. — The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council #2 has opened a $3.5 million training center at 18036 Eads Ave. in Chesterfield. The 75,000-square-foot training facility more than triples the school's previous space and unites classes once spread among five buildings in St. Louis. The facility is aimed at advancing skills in residential and commercial painting and industrial painting, as well as other finishing trades. The building includes six classrooms, mock structures for interior and exterior training and a blueprint room. The project team included Charles E. Bell Architects, RPA Construction Services and J.W. Fuller Construction.

CREWS BREAK GROUND ON BEACON HIGH SCHOOL IN NYC

NEW YORK CITY — Crews have broken ground on the new Beacon High School at 521 W. 43rd St. in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Skanska recently signed an $88 million contract to convert an existing six-story New York Public Library book storage facility into a modern high school. The project will include extensive demolition and the construction of a gymnasium and auditorium for the school's 2,900 students. The high school is scheduled for completion in May 2015.

DUKE HALL TO UNDERGO $33M RENOVATION

HARRISONBURG, VA. — Skanska USA has been awarded the $33 million renovation and expansion of the 65,000-square-foot Duke Hall at James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg. The renovation will include replacing of the building's main engineering, electrical, telecommunications, plumbing and mechanical systems. Additionally, new elevators will be installed and the visual art studios and labs will be updated to meet life safety codes. The building will also be expanded by 51,500 square feet for studios and classroom space for the School of Art and Art History. Completion is slated for November 2013.
