CAPTIVA ISLAND, FLA. — Fort Myers, Fla.-based Stevens Construction has begun construction of the new children’s pool complex at South Seas Island Resort located at 5400 Plantation Rd. on Captiva Island. The pool area, which is slated for completion by the end of this year, will feature a 120-foot cyclone-curved waterslide, a 50-foot vertical slide, brick pavers, landscaping and custom lighting. J.P. Pencil, Terry Tjelmeland and Lizette Martin of Stevens Construction are part of the development team; Ron Weaver and Zach Smith of BSSW Architects are providing architectural services at the site. The cost of construction was not disclosed.

NEW YORK CITY — New design renderings have been unveiled for the first two sections of the High Line, a new city park currently under construction on Manhattan’s West Side. The $170 million park will sit on top of a former elevated rail structure that sits 29 feet in the air and spans 22 city blocks above the West Chelsea and Meatpacking District neighborhoods. Section 1 of the park, located from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, is set to open by the end of the year. Section 2, located from 20th Street to 30th Street, is expected to open by the end of 2009. Field Operations is serving as landscape architect, with Diller Scofidion + Renfro serving as project architect.
PARAMOUNT, CALIF. — McCarthy Building Companies Inc. has been awarded the construction contract for the three-phase expansion of Paramount High School in Paramount. The 2-year, $70 million expansion project includes construction of a stadium and athletic complex in the first phase; a stadium field and house in the second phase; and a new science building, mini gym and the renovation of existing academic and athletic facilities in the third phase. Construction of the first phase is currently underway and will feature a 6,000-seat stadium, a soccer/football field, a nine-lane track and equipment for track and field activities, including the high jump and pole vault, and a fully equipped press box. Construction of the second phase, which is slated to begin in spring 2009, will include an athletic field house with locker rooms, concessions, weight rooms and other related facilities. The final phase will include expansion to the existing gymnasium, a new mini gymnasium and library, upgrades to the existing auditorium and classrooms and a new science building. Construction is expected to continue through 2010. LPA Architects is providing architectural services for the project. Financing is provided through the Measure AA, a $100 million bond that was passed in November 2006.
LONG BEACH, CALIF. — The West Coast Division of Suffolk Construction Co. has been selected by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for the construction of a $106 million high school project in Long Beach. South Beach High School #4 will consist of a high-end, four-story building offering 67 classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, a food service area, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a multipurpose room and a subterranean 163-car parking structure. Additionally, the 13.7-acre site includes football and baseball fields, a jogging track, bleachers, basketball courts, a stadium, maintenance and operations building, hardscape and off-site improvement work. Construction began in June and completion is slated for April 2011.
FORT MYERS, FLA. — Construction is underway for Southwest Florida Addiction Services, a detox and counseling center for patient with alcohol and drug dependency located at 3763 Evans Ave. in Fort Myers. Fort Myers-based Westcoast Structural Concrete Masonry has been retained to provide the concrete floors, sidewalks, dumpster enclosure and generator enclosure for the 38,000-square-foot building. Owen-Ames-Kimball is the general contractor for the project, which is slated for completion in August.
APOPKA, FLA. — Orlando, Fla.-based HuntonBrady Architects has completed construction of a new dormitory for Forest Lake Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist boarding school, located at 3909 East Semoran Blvd. in Apopka, Fla. The 35,000-square-foot renovation and addition includes a three-story dormitory building with rooms for 120 students, a chapel, and private apartments for the boys’ and girls’ deans. The cost of construction was not disclosed.
ST. LOUIS — Walton Construction St. Louis has completed construction at Brown Elementary School located at 3325 Chickory Creek Lane in St. Louis. The $3.4 million project included the renovation of existing facilities and the addition of 11,000 square feet, which houses a new library, a new wing with six classrooms, and a new front entry wing. Brown Elementary School’s development was the first of three phases in Walton Construction’s $21.3 million project for the Hazelwood School District. Central High School and the Learning Center within the Hazelwood School District are undergoing additions and renovations slated for completion in July.
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — White Plains, N.Y.-based Houlihan Parnes/iCap Realty Advisors has brokered the sale of Fordham University’s Marymount Campus, located in Tarrytown. The property comprises three adjacent, non-contiguous parcels of land totaling 25.33 acres. The parcels contain 11 buildings totaling more than 500,000 square feet. James Houlihan, Andrew Greenspan and Jamie Schwartz of Houlihan Parnes represented the seller, Fordham University. The buyer, international education company EF Education, plans to relocate to the campus. The acquisition price was not disclosed.
KEENE, N.H. — Cambridge, Mass.-based Architectural Resources Cambridge has been selected by the Keene Family YMCA to design a new 60,000-square-foot community recreation center to replace the existing YMCA located at 38 Roxbury St. in Keene. The new facility will include a swimming pool, a therapy pool, a basketball court, an indoor track, gymnastics facilities, a climbing wall, adult and youth fitness areas, a childcare center and community meeting spaces. The new YMCA will be designed in a style similar to the region’s rural architecture, with gabled roofs, red corrugated siding, a heavy timber canopy and a metal roof.
ATLANTA — The National Museum of Patriotism has announced plans to relocate to 275 Baker St. within the Luckie Marietta District in Atlanta. Other attractions in the Luckie Marietta District include the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, the New World of Coca-Cola Centennial Olympic Park and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. The museum, which is scheduled to open in fall 2008, will host the 2008 Congressional Medal of Honor Luncheon. Exhibits at the interactive facility include The Symbols of America, The Immigrant Experience, The Hall of Patriots and The Founding Fathers.
