McCarthy to Build $70M Improvement Project for Kansas River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, KAN. — McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. will build a $70 million improvement project for the Kansas River Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 1400 E. 8th St. in Lawrence. The project marks the city’s second-largest funded wastewater project. The improvements are required to meet the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System regulatory permit requirements issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The plant, which receives nearly 80 percent of the city’s wastewater, originally opened in 1956 and has an average daily flow of 8 million gallons per day. Preconstruction efforts are underway, with official groundbreaking slated for May 2023. Completion is scheduled for fall 2026.

Adolfson & Peterson Construction Completes $53M Renovation, Addition to Metro Dallas High School

MIDLOTHIAN, TEXAS — General contractor Adolfson & Peterson Construction has completed a $53 million renovation and expansion project at Midlothian Heritage High School, located south of Dallas. Designed by VLK Architects, the project updated the main entrance and added a 185,000-square-foot academic wing with science labs, gyms, a fine arts complex and cafeteria. Construction began in summer 2020.

JOHNSTON, R.I. — Marcus & Millichap has brokered the $10.2 million sale of a 20,560-square-foot civic building in Johnston, a western suburb of Providence. The building houses offices of the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services. Laurie Ann Drinkwater and Seth Richard of Marcus & Millichap represented the seller, a private investment group, in the transaction. Additional terms of sale were not disclosed.

Kraus-Anderson Completes $16M Police Department Facility for City of Crystal in Minnesota

CRYSTAL, MINN. — Kraus-Anderson has completed construction of a $16 million police department facility located on the Crystal City Hall campus at 4141 Douglas Drive North. Crystal is located about five miles north of Minneapolis. Designed by Wold Architects & Engineers, the 53,300-square-foot facility features workspaces, a secure evidence storage area, indoor fleet storage and a dedicated space for K9 officers. The building also includes a detention space, garage, locker rooms and offices.

Tennessee Titans, Local Government Agree to Terms for New $2.1B Enclosed Stadium in Nashville

NASHVILLE, TENN. — The NFL’s Tennessee Titans and the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) have agreed to terms to bring a new $2.1 billion football stadium to Nashville’s East Bank district. The enclosed stadium will span 1.7 million square feet and will be situated near the Cumberland River to the east of the Titans’ current arena, Nissan Stadium. The site for the new stadium currently comprises surface parking lots. Once complete, the project will represent the largest building project in the Metro’s history and will attract marquee events such as the Super Bowl and CMA Fest country music festival, according to ESPN. “When my father brought this team to Tennessee 25 years ago, I don’t think he could have imagined a better home for our organization,” says Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. “The way the people of Tennessee have embraced this team as their own is truly something special, and I am thrilled that with this new agreement, we will cement our future here in Nashville for another generation.” Funding for the new stadium comprises four categories, with football-related sources (i.e. the Titans, the National Football League and personal seat license sales) representing the largest source …

UCLA Agrees to Acquire Former Marymount California University Campus in Southern California for $80M

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CALIF. — The University of California Los Angeles, under the advisory of the University of California Board of Regents, has agreed to purchased the former Marymount California University campus in Rancho Palos Verdes for $80 million. The acquisition, which was under a mandate by the University of California Board of Regents for the state’s public universities to educate more students, is slated to close in October. Mike Condon Jr., Kimberly Brown, McKenna Gaskill, Erica Finch, Jacob Kovner and Connor Martin of Cushman & Wakefield represented UCLA in the transaction. Adrienne Barr and Steffan Braunlich of Berkadia represented Marymount California University in the deal. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island, the coastal property comprises 24.6 acres of developed campus and vacant land, plus a neighboring vacant 86-unit student apartment complex situated on 11 acres in San Pedro. Located at 30800 Palos Verdes Drive East, the campus consists of 10 existing academic buildings totaling 92,268 of gross building area previously used for classroom, administrative and other campus functions. McCarthy Building Cos. Starts Construction of $17.5M Student Experience Center at Arizona Western College in Yuma

YUMA, ARIZ. — McCarthy Building Cos. has broken ground for development of the $17.5 million Student Experience Center at Arizona Western College in Yuma. Serving more than 11,000 students, the two-story, 45,000-square-foot center will be situated on 3.5 acres. Slated to open in fall 2023, the center will feature a lecture hall, multiple instructional modalities, shared common areas, conference rooms, maker space, an eatery, game areas and a multimedia center and esports arena. The multimedia center will house the KAWC radio station and broadcast television studio with an emphasis on modern technology. Students and the public will be able to observe behind-the-scenes production through glass walls and TV monitors. The Student Experience Center will also offer a space for honors students to study and collaborate on group projects; a food pantry and clothing program for disadvantaged students; and 13,000 square feet of administrative space on the second floor. EMC2 is serving as the design architect on the project. The project team also includes Haxton Masonry, Delta Diversified Enterprises, Yuma Valley Contractors, Pacific Steel Inc. and Progressive Roofing.

EW Howell Construction Completes Elementary School Project in Manhattan

NEW YORK CITY — New York-based general contractor EW Howell Construction Group has completed PS 464, an elementary school in Manhattan’s Financial District. The school occupies 92,000 square feet across the first nine floors within 42 Trinity Place, a 40-story residential building, and serves students in grades pre-K through 5. In addition, the school’s south wing comprises four stories in the Robert & Anne Dickey House, a renovated historical building. In addition to new classrooms, the school features a science lab, art and music room, gymnasium, cafeteria and two outdoor playgrounds.

HNTB Underway on Renovation, Expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

AUSTIN, TEXAS — HNTB, a Kansas City-based design-build firm focused on urban infrastructure projects, is underway on the renovation and expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. HTNB is working with global design firm Populous on the project, which will include updates to the existing Barbara Jordan terminal, a new below-grade passenger tunnel and a new Midfield Concourse with space for up to 30 gates. A tentative completion date for these pieces of the project was not disclosed.

Colliers Brokers $7.6M Sale of Civic Building in Boston’s Back Bay Area

BOSTON — Colliers has brokered the $7.6 million sale of an 8,350-square-foot civic building located at 136 Newbury St. in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. Kendin Carr, Caleb Hudak and John Real of Colliers represented the seller, Modern School of Fashion, in the transaction. The undisclosed buyer plans to convert the building into a contemporary office space.
