PLANO, TEXAS — The Plano Independent School District has hired Cadence McShane Construction Co. to renovate and expand Brinker Elementary School, located at 3800 Clark Parkway in Plano, and J.M. Daffron Elementary School, located at 3900 Preston Meadow Drive in Plano. Cadence McShane will renovate 67,676 square feet of space at Brinker and construct 21,048 square feet. The construction firm will also renovate 67,676 square feet of space at J.M. Daffron and add 17,000 square feet. Construction on both projects begins in March and will wrap up in August 2014. PBK is providing architectural services for the Brinker project, and Perkins + Will is providing architectural services for J.M. Daffron. The schools will remain open throughout the construction process.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — ToolBank has signed a 7,830-square-foot lease at 2531 St. Tryon St. in Charlotte. ToolBank serves more than 150 charitable organizations in the Charlotte area, providing them access to more than 140 different types of tools in volumes large enough to equip thousands of volunteers at a time. The organization will occupy the entire industrial building for its non-profit operations. The property is undergoing renovations and will reopen in April 2013. Frank McCleneghan of Piedmont Properties/CORFAC International represented the tenant in the transaction. Doug Wynne of Perennial Commercial Real Estate represented the landlord.
UNIVERSITY CITY, MO. — Construction is under way for the new $3 million Firehouse No. 1 in University City, a suburb of St. Louis. The 17,000-square-foot facility, located at Vernon and Westgate avenues, will include five engine bays, a training room, administrative offices and a mezzanine with a workout room. Living quarters on the second floor will include 10 bedrooms with 30 beds, a full kitchen and an outdoor deck. The project is funded in part by a $2.6 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Assistance to Firefighters Station Construction Grant, with the balance funded by University City. Kwame Building Group is the construction project manager, and Archimages is the architect. The firehouse is slated for completion in late summer.
COMMERCE, TEXAS — Satterfield & Pontikes Construction has begun to construct 29,000 square feet of additional space to the Sam Rayburn Student Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in Commerce. The two-phase, $7 million project will accommodate the growing student population. Phase I will double the first-floor dining hall to approximately 700 seats and will open in January 2014. Phase II will double the space on the second floor for meeting rooms and student services. The second phase is scheduled for a May 2014 completion. Dallas-based VAI Architects will provide architectural services, Dallas-based Pacheco Koch will provide civil engineering services and San Antonio-based Jaster-Quintanilla will provide structural engineering services.
EMERSON, GA. — LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center has acquired 74.4 acres of land in Emerson from Allatoona Distribution. The new acreage will be part of LakePoint's South campus, which will include a fast-pitch softball/junior baseball complex; Terminus Wake Park, the largest cable wake boarding park in North America; a track and field venue; and a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports pavilion. The project broke ground in November.
FORT MEADE, MD. — Skanska USA has signed a $30.8 million contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct the U.S. Army’s Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) complex in Fort Meade. The project includes the demolition and construction of three new buildings located within the current AWG complex, including the new 75,000-square-foot headquarters building, a 2,700-square-foot visitor control center and a 7,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance and fabrication facility. The project is under way and is scheduled for completion in December 2015. Additionally, the U.S. Army has the option to select Skanska to construct a fourth building, a 15,000-square-foot facility for the Department of Public Works on a site approximately one mile away.
NEW YORK CITY — The Bowery Mission Society has acquired a six-story, non-profit community facility at 315 E. 115th St. in New York City for $5.3 million. The 21,390-square-foot building previously housed a mother and baby program. David Lebenstein, Robair Reichenstein and Debra Wollens of Cassidy Turley represented the seller, Palladia Inc., in the transaction. Cornerstone Advisory represented the buyer.
KILLEEN, TEXAS — Skanska has signed a contract with Texas A&M University-Central Texas to construct a $23.8 million, four-story facility on its new Killeen campus. The project is Phase II of the new master-planned campus, which will house the campus library, counseling center, career services, school of education, social work program, instructional technology, teachers' offices, classrooms and laboratory space. Good Fulton & Farrell Architects is the project's architect. Construction is under way on the building and its completion is expected in March 2014.
ATLANTA — Invest Atlanta, the official economic development authority for the City of Atlanta, and The PNC Financial Services Group have provided $24 million in new markets tax credits to fully fund Phase I of The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, a museum under way in downtown Atlanta. Phase I will include 42,000 square feet of exhibit and special event space. Invest Atlanta allocated $13 million in tax credits through its affiliate Atlanta Emerging Markets Inc., secured from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and PNC provided $11 million. The Center’s $65 million Phase I is now fully funded. The three-story museum will include a gallery for the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection and the civil rights and human rights exhibitions.
BOYLSTON, MASS. — CTA Construction has completed the new, 126,000-square-foot Tahanto Regional Middle/High School for the Berlin-Boylston Regional School District. The $33 million project replaces a 98,000-square-foot school building, which is in severe disrepair. The former school will be demolished by this June. The new building features two separate entrances for the middle and high school, along with a shared auditorium, dining commons and gymnasium. Site work for the project included new athletic fields and parking areas. The project team included the Tahanto Regional Middle/High School Building Committee; PMA Construction Services, the project manager; and HMFH Architects, the project architect.
