NEW YORK CITY — The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, a nonprofit visual arts and design school, has acquired a 5,200-square-foot retail condominium at 136 W. 22nd St. for $2.1 million. The property is a ground-floor, two-unit retail space, which is located two blocks from Madison Square Park. The space is currently vacant. NORFOLK, VA. — Hampton Roads Church has purchased the 13,500-square-foot Brith Sholom Center at 1132 Pickett Rd. in Norfolk for $1.25 million to serve as a new church location. Geoffrey Poston of Cushman & Wakefield/Thalhimer represented the seller, and William Throne of Cushman & Wakefield/Thalhimer represented the buyer.
MINNEAPOLIS — AECOM Technology Corp. will provide preliminary engineering work on the Southwest Light Rail Transit line in Minneapolis. The Los Angeles-based corporation was awarded a $16.8 million contract by the Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities to provide the services for the western half of a 15.8-mile corridor that will include 17 new stations stretching from downtown Minneapolis through several southwestern suburban cities. Construction is set to begin in 2015, with the line scheduled to begin operating in 2018.
NEW YORK CITY — Skanska USA, in a joint venture with Trevcon Construction, has secured a $181 million contract to build a new marine transfer facility in Manhattan. The New York City Department of Sanitation is developing the building along the East River, which will serve as a solid waste management facility. The property will have a capacity to process 4,290 tons of municipal solid waste per day. The project is scheduled for completion in March 2016.
MIAMI — South Florida-based general contractor Miller Construction Co. has completed the 8,140-square-foot Carol City Early Learning Center, a child development center in Miami, for Education First Inc. It includes seven classrooms, six bathrooms, a multi-purpose room, two fenced-in playground areas, and space for a future commercial-grade kitchen. It also features a functional drop-off lane and parking lot. The Carol City Early Learning Center serves children six weeks old through eight years old. Programs include pre-school and voluntary pre-kindergarten classes with a customized curricula, and daycare, afterschool care and summer camp.
SANTE FE — Cadence McShane Construction Co. has completed the repurposing of the existing 45,612-square-foot Cowan Elementary School and the renovation/addition for the 108,800-square-foot Sante Fe Junior High School, both of which are part of the Sante Fe Independent School District (ISD). Cadence McShane has converted Cowan Elementary into the new Elizabeth Yaws Cowan Education Center, which will serve as the administration facility for Sante Fe ISD. The education center has an updated boardroom, expanded office space and a new technology center. The renovation project at Sante Fe Junior High included the reconstruction of the existing 99,000 square feet of space plus a 9,800-square-foot addition. SBWV Architects provided the comprehensive architectural services for both projects.
BETHANY, MO. — AmeriBid is conducting a bank-ordered auction of a medium security prison facility in Airpark Industrial Park in Bethany. CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Municipal School District's (CMSD) headquarters building will be offered for sale at an open outcry auction Thursday, March 7 at the Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel. Across the street from the CMSD building is the site for the new $460 million Medical Mart and Convention Center, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013. ST. PAUL, MINN. — The Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority has marked the completion of a $243 million restoration project at the Union Depot train station in St. Paul. Transportation services have also returned to the 90-year-old structure, which hasn't been open to the public since the last train served the station in 1971. The project included rebuilding the train deck and tracks, constructing a new multilevel passenger drop-off entrance with ticket and baggage counters and repainting and restoring plaster in the waiting room. Crews also restored the Fourth Street entrance to its original design. The project team included Mortenson, URS Corp. and HGA Architects.
ELGIN, ILL. — Midwest Elite Gymnastics Academy (MEGA) is relocating from South Barrington to an 18,680-square-foot facility in Elgin, directly off Interstate 90. MEGA is a training facility for children and young adults for fun, fitness seekers and serious competitors. This year, MEGA included 25 individual state champions. The new gym will open this January.
