CHICAGO — Tandem Construction has started work on a 2,000-square-foot addition to The Academy of Scholastic Achievement, a public charter school located at 4651 W. Madison St. in Chicago. When complete, the new space will serve as a science lab. Tandem expects the project will be complete at the end of January 2013. Red Architects is designing the project.

PLANO — Cadence McShane Construction Co. has completed a new 22,000-square-foot addition to Clark High School, located at 523 Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. The addition includes eight new classrooms on the first floor, four new science laboratories and new restrooms to serve the expansion of students in the school. Corgan Associates Inc. provided architectural services for the project.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Demolition is set to implode one of two buildings at the former IBM campus at 4111 Northside Pkwy. in Atlanta to make way for the new North Atlanta High School, which will move from its current location at 2875 Northside Dr. in August 2013. The adaptive re-use project will include the construction of a new building and reconfiguration of an existing building. The new building will include a 600-seat auditorium, a 150-seat black box theater, a 2,100-seat competition gymnasium and a practice gymnasium. The existing building will be converted into classrooms, offices, a library and a cafeteria. Cooper Carry is the project architect and JE Dunn Construction is the general contractor.

VALPARAISO, IND. — McShane Construction Co. has completed a 51,500-square-foot addition to the College of Arts and Sciences at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso. The two-story addition includes classrooms, offices and a teacher's lounge. The property recently received LEED Silver certification. EHDD Architecture designed the project and KJWW Engineering provided the structural engineering.

PLANO — The Plano Independent School District has selected Cadence McShane to complete an 86,000-square-foot expansion project at Plano West Senior High School, located at 5601 W. Parker Road in Plano. The construction assignment includes building a two-story, 52,000-square-foot career/technology center and adding space to three campus buildings. The project is slated for a May 2013 completion. Dallas-based WRA Architects is providing architectural services for the construction/expansion project.

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MINN. — Opus Design Build is designing and constructing a new 4,000-square-foot Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) building at the Convent of Visitation School in Mendota Heights. In addition to the STEM center, Opus will also construct a new main entrance along with the additional classrooms and study and gathering areas. The new building will serve as a workshop and assembly space for the school's robotics program and engineering classes. Concurrent with the work, an 1,800-square-foot expansion to the school's dining area will also be constructed. The project is slated for completion in January 2013.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Hollister Construction has completed the 21,109-square-foot Fairleigh Dickinson University's (FDU) School of Pharmacy in Florham Park. Hollister renovated the existing office space at 230 Park Ave. into classroom, laboratory, meeting and office space. RSC Architects designed the project. More than 80 students are now enrolled in FDU's School of Pharmacy, New Jersey's first pharmacy school associated with a private university.

NEWARK, N.J. — Hollister Construction Services has started work on the 9,000-square-foot New Jersey All Stars Center for Afterschool Development at 33 Washington St. in Newark. The building will open in 2013 as a headquarters for the All Stars Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting youth development. The facility will enable the organization to expand its programming and partnerships in the community. Douglas Balder, an All Stars Project National board member and architect, designed the project. Posen Architects will serve as architect of record.

DALLAS — Satterfield & Pontikes Construction has been selected to develop the 206,000-square-foot Billy Earl Dade Middle School, a $34.6 million project located east of downtown Dallas near the Cotton Bowl Stadium. The school will serve approximately 1,000 students and will feature 43 classrooms, a media center, visual arts area, special education classrooms, computer and science labs, two gymnasiums, auditorium, cafeteria and administrative space. Kell Munoz Architects/KAI Texas designed the school in compliance with standards set by the Texas Collaborative for High Performance Schools. Parsons will serve as project manager for the school's construction, which is slated to wrap up in summer 2013.
