NEW CITY HALL, FIRE STATION OPEN IN BERKELEY

BERKELEY, MO. — Construction is complete on a new city hall and fire station in Berkeley. The buildings are located within a $16 million municipal complex, which will also contain a police station. Kwame Building Group, the construction manager, broke ground on the project in 2010 and construction began simultaneously on the 29,500-square-foot city hall and the 17,200-square-foot fire station. Features include separate offices for each of the city's five council members, expanded living quarters for firefighters and larger bays for fire engines.

FORMER DISTRIBUTION CENTER TO BE CONVERTED INTO SPORTS COMPLEX

LANCASTER, PA. — Sports Complex LP, an entity headed by former Auntie Anne's pretzels owner Sam Beiler, has purchased 2913 Spooky Nook Rd. in Lancaster. The 549,000-square-foot industrial facility was previously occupied by Armstrong Industries, which used the space as a distribution center for flooring products. The new owner plans to convert the property into a regional, youth-oriented sports complex. Gerard Blinebury, Leah Balerno, Pat McBride and Adam Cambell of Cushman & Wakefield represented the seller in the transaction. Tim Shreiner of Prudential H.S.G. Real Estate represented the buyer.

TWO CHARTER SCHOOLS SET TO OPEN AT 570 BROAD STREET IN NEWARK

NEWARK, N.J. — Two new charter schools, Newark Prep and Spirit Prep, are slated to open in September at 570 Broad St., a newly renovated landmark in downtown Newark. The schools will occupy four floors, totaling 60,000 square feet, in the 15-story building. Each school will combine rigorous college-prep and career readiness programs with online curriculum to serve the needs of Newark area students. The Berger Organization owns and manages the property.

CADENCE MCSHANE TO EXPAND SOUTHLAKE CHURCH

SOUTHLAKE — Cadence McShane Construction Co. has been awarded an expansion/renovation assignment for White's Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 185 S. White's Chapel Blvd. in Southlake. The project includes a two-story, 18,936-square-foot addition, renovation of the church's meeting space, landscaping and expanding the parking lot. Jacobs & Associates is providing architectural services for the assignment, which is slated for a December completion.

GROUND BREAKS ON $87M INNOVATION CENTER

THOMPSON'S STATION, TENN. — Mars Petcare and The Nutro Co. have broken ground on the $87 million, 90-acre Regional Innovation Center, located in Thompson's Station. The four-building property, which is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, will serve as the companies' home base for creating future pet care innovations for its North American market. The buildings will include an Innovation Center building, Product Development Center, Shared Services building and the Pet Health and Nutrition Center. Nashville, Tenn.-based Hastings Architecture Association is the lead architect for the project and Brasfield & Gorrie's Nashville office is the general contractor. Completion is slated for spring 2014.

HOLLAND COMPLETES PHASE I OF $29M OKAWVILLE SCHOOL

OKAWVILLE, ILL. — Holland Construction has completed the first phase of the new Okawville School for West Washington County Community Unit District No. 10. Phase I of the facility, which consists of grades K through 12, included construction of the district office, a gymnasium, the junior and senior high school and a cafeteria. The $29 million, two-phase project will include 166,000 square feet of new construction built on two levels around the existing gymnasium. The second phase includes construction of a wing that will house grades K through 6, a computer lab, as well as art and music rooms. Phase II is slated for completion in the summer of 2013. Okawville is located in southern Illinois.

HOAR, PALADIN TO BUILD $16.19M FITNESS FACILITY

FORT CAMPBELL, KY. — Hoar Construction and Paladin Construction Group have been retained to build a $16.19 million, 64,000-square-foot physical fitness facility, located at Fort Campbell. The facility will include cardio and circuit training areas, a free weight area, group exercise rooms, fitness assessment and stretching area, a gymnasium, racquetball courts, men's and women's locker rooms and sauna areas. Additionally, the project includes a multi-purpose athletic field, two softball fields, an indoor climbing wall and a 140-spot parking lot. Gresham Smith & Partners will team with Hoar and Paladin for the design/build facility.

CADENCE MCSHANE TO RENOVATE DALLAS SCHOOL

DALLAS —The Plano Independent School District has selected Cadence McShane to renovate and expand the 95,632-square-foot Mitchell Elementary School, located at 4223 Briargrove Road in Dallas. The redevelopment program includes an addition of 34,376 square feet, which will feature 42 classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen and library. SHW Group is providing architectural services for the school, which is slated for completion in August 2013.

ARMY TO BUILD $7.5M RESERVE CENTER

PANAMA CITY, FLA. —The U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers has plans to build a $7.5 million, 22,600-square-foot U.S. Army Reserve Center, located on Highway 77 in Panama City. The building will include 18,000 square feet of administrative space and a 4,600-square-foot maintenance facility. Charlie Haas and Jim Everitt of Counts Real Estate Group represented both James Maulden and Gary Seymour, the land sellers, in the transaction, and the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers.

S&P COMPLETES $4M PARK AND RIDE FACILITY

LEAGUE CITY — Satterfield & Pontikes Construction has finished the construction of a $4 million Park and Ride facility for Gulf Coast Center MHMR Connect Transit, located at the University of Texas Medical Branch Victory Lakes campus in League City. The project includes a 1,872-square-foot terminal building and parking for more than 400 cars. PGAL provided architectural and design services, and The Goodman Corporation and the Office of Facilities Planning & Construction for UTMB-Galveston provided management services.
