BOSTON — Suffolk Construction Co. has been selected as the general contractor for a $250 million project at Boston's Logan International Airport. The Consolidated Rental Car Facility and Southwest Service Area will consist of a four-level, 1.2 million-square-foot parking garage as well as a 112,000-square-foot Customer Service Center building. The project is being designed to achieve LEED-Silver certification. Construction will begin in August and is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2013.

HOUSTON — Cadence McShane Construction Co. will soon start work on the 110,160-square-foot Edgewood Elementary School for the Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston. The school will be located at the intersection of Hollister Road and Kempwood Drive. The school will span 38 classrooms, a science lab, a library, a cafeteria, a gym and music rooms. Construction was financed with a $597.1 million bond that has a term of 10 years. Delivery is slated for July 2011.

MIAMI — Coastal Construction Group has completed the 370,000-square-foot Miami Carol City High School in Miami. The Miami property, which was finished 4 months ahead of schedule, is the second phase of a three-phase project, which also included construction of a 34-classroom building and calls for the demolition of the existing school and the construction of new athletic fields. Students will start at Miami Carol City High School this August.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA — Opus Design Build and Opus Northwest have broken ground for the construction of a 170,355-square-foot Armed Forces Readiness Center (ARFC) and Field Maintenance Shop (FMS), which will be located at 1500 Wright Brothers Blvd. in Cedar Rapids. The more than 113,506-square-foot ARFC will contain a 9,000-square-foot assembly hall, a full kitchen, multi-purpose classrooms, a weapons simulation facility, storage and administrative space, road access to additional developments and parking for 560 vehicles. The 56,749-square-foot FMS will feature 10 work bays, one wash bay, an electronic communications bay, electronics repair facilities, a multi-purpose classroom/training facility, a small arms repair facility and parking for 67 vehicles. Designed by Opus Architects & Engineers, the $38 million project is seeking LEED Gold certification. Completion is scheduled for September 2011. The project is 100 percent federally funded, with support from the State of Iowa for Iowa Communications Network connectivity.

WESTOVER HILLS, TEXAS — A joint venture between Trammell Crow Co. and Kennedy Associates, Partners Health Trust, has purchased the 60,549-square-foot Westover Hills Medical Plaza I medical office building from Trammell Crow Co. for an undisclosed amount. The property, located at 11212 State Highway 151 in Westover Hills, is 96 percent leased to 20 physician groups. The building was completed in December 2007. Financing for the purchase was provided by Life Company of the Southwest.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — KAI Texas will undertake a $3.9 million renovation to Eastern Hills High School and Eastern Hills Elementary in Fort Worth. The 15,000-square-foot project, located on Shelton Street in Fort Worth, will deliver in February. The renovations are part of Fort Worth Independent School District's $593.6 million capital improvement program. KAI is also designing projects at the Luella Merritt Elementary School and Leonard 6th Grade Center.

NEW YORK CITY — The grand opening has been held for the new East Side Middle School on New York City's Upper East Side. The school is located at 331 E. 91st St. It occupies 80,000 square feet within a mixed-use building that also include 155 cooperative apartments and retail space. The new location will expand the school's capacity from 350 to 540 seats. The DeMatteis Organizations and The Mattone Group are the project's developers.

CARLSBAD, CALIF. — McCarthy Building Cos. has begun construction for 11 new educational buildings at Carlsbad High School, located at 3557 Lancer Way in Carlsbad. Construction of the one- and two-story education facilities, which will total 99,000 square feet of new classroom, performing arts, vocational education lab and food-service space, is the third and final phase of an $86 million renovation of Carlsbad High School that began in June 2008. Final completion is slated for mid-October 2011. Gafcon is the program manager for the Carlsbad High School renovation project, and Perkins+Will is the architect. Originally built in 1957, the high school currently has an enrollment of nearly 2,900 students.

BOSTON — The recent expansion of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine has been certified LEED-Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. The project added five stories and 95,000 square feet to the existing 10-story building, which is located at One Kneeland St. in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood. Sustainable features of the project include a high-performance building envelope, a design that promotes the use of daylighting, and state-of-the-art mechanical and plumbing systems. The measures will help the building use 20 to 30 percent less energy and 30 to 45 percent less water. ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge was the project architect, and Shawmut Design & Construction was the general contractor. The building opened late last year.
