BRIGHTON, COLO. — The Weitz Company has broken ground on a new 45,000-square-foot public charter school located at 340 S. 45th Ave. in Brighton. When it opens to students in grades K-5 in September, the facility will feature 28 classrooms. The school’s board of directors selected National Heritage Academies as its partner to manage the daily operations of the school.

PINCKNEYVILLE, ILL. — Pinckney Community High School District #101 has selected Swansea, Ill.-based Holland Construction Services to construct a new 54,000-square-foot school in Pinckneyville. Slated to break ground in spring 2011, the new structure will replace two existing buildings, which currently house 470 students in pre-kindergarten and grades nine through 12. The project will renovate the existing gymnasium that will feature a newly installed heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Additionally, the new structure will house 500 students and offer science rooms with a lab and preparation room, art classrooms with a darkroom, a home economics and food lab, computer and tech labs, a pre-kindergarten classroom, a media center, a girl’s gymnasium and locker rooms, restrooms, general classrooms, special education classrooms with office and restroom spaces, and administrative and guidance offices for the high school and district. The project will also feature a nurse’s office, a teacher’s workroom, storage and mechanical rooms, an elevator and a cafeteria, a kitchen and a cafetorium with a moveable stage. Steeleville, Ill.-based Mevert Professional Associates is providing architectural services for the project.

HOUSTON — Cadence McShane Construction Co. will break ground on the 98,724-square-foot Patterson Elementary School in Houston for the Houston Independent School District. The $13.7 million property, which will be located at 5302 Allendale Road, is set to deliver in May 2011. The LEED Silver-registered school will encompass classrooms, a cafeteria and kitchen, a library and a basketball pavilion. Patterson Elementary School will replace an outdated facility that was built in 1958. Sustaita Architects will design the property.

NEW YORK CITY — Levien & Co. is working on behalf of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum to redevelop 10,500 square feet of space at 103 Orchard St. in Manhattan for the new Sadie Samuelson Levy Immigrant Heritage Center. The approximately $5 million project will include the redevelopment of the lower three floors of the building for use as a museum. The upper floors of the building will continue to be occupied as residential apartments but will be restored for use by the museum as they become vacant. Perkins Eastman is the project architect and Kel-Mar Designs is the general contractor.

SANFORD, FLA. — Spolski Construction Co. will break ground this spring on a 53,351-square-foot maintenance facility at the Orlando Sanford International Airport for Avocet Capital. The property is located at 2551 Hellcat Lane in Sanford. The project will encompass 44,000 square feet of hanger space, 4,000 square feet of maintenance space and 5,351 square feet for offices.

NEW YORK CITY — Construction is complete for the renovation of the former Clearview Cinema building at 1871 Broadway in New York City. The $3 million project was undertaken by the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), which will use the facility as a lecture hall. The auditorium's seating capacity was enlarged for up to 260 students. In addition, the building's egress plan was redesigned, as was the cafŽ, and the projector room was refurbished with state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. The project architect was locally based Gerner, Kronick + Valcarcel Architects.

MILWAUKEE — Marquette University and Opus North Corp. have broken ground for the development of the five-story, 115,000-square-foot Discovery Learning Complex. Located along Wisconsin Avenue between 16th and 17th streets in Milwaukee, the $35 million facility will feature a Discovery Learning Laboratory, a two-story engineering materials and structural testing laboratory, teaching and research laboratories, common areas and office space. The building is the first phase of a $100 million, 250,000-square-foot complex. Completion is slated for August 2011. Opus North is the design-builder, along with Opus Architects & Engineers as the designer and architect of record. Hammel Green & Abrahamson also provided design services.

HOLYOKE, MASS. — Newton, Mass.-based Diversified Project Management has been selected to provide construction management services for the expansion of the Holyoke Public Library. The project will include the expansion of the building, which will bring it to approximately 40,000 square feet in size, as well as the restoration of a significant portion of the historic structure. The estimated project cost is between $14 and $17 million. The final design of the project is expected to be approved by June.

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. — A 32,980-square-foot Los Angeles Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) has been completed by Mar Canyon Grand LLC in El Segundo, and the United States Department of Defense has taken occupancy. Located at 1776 E. Grand Ave., the facility features general office space, medical office and lab space, a state-of-the-art medical diagnosis and testing facility, classrooms, food service, meeting and ceremony rooms. Mar Ventures, Mar Canyon Grand LLC's managing member, constructed the LA MEPS facility for LEED certification.

CHICAGO — Leopardo, serving as general contractor, is constructing the $3.9 million Valley Forge Park and Field House in Chicago. Located at 7001 W. 59th St., the 10,244-square-foot field house will feature a half-court gymnasium, fitness and clubrooms, locker rooms, a pantry, and a reception and administrative office. Additionally, the project includes a new play lot and improvements to the existing baseball field. Seeking LEED Silver certification, the project will feature geothermal systems for heating and cooling, rainwater harvesting and a pre-vegetated modular green roofing system. Booth Hansen is providing architectural services for the project, which is scheduled for completion in September.
