PUBLIX ACQUIRES 49 FLORIDA STORES FROM ALBERTSON’S

LAKELAND, FLA. — Publix Super Markets, one of the 10 largest-volume supermarket chains in the United States, has entered into an agreement to acquire 49 Florida stores from Albertson’s. The amount of the sale was not disclosed.The deal is expected to close in September and will include 15 North Florida locations, 30 Central Florida locations and four South Florida locations.
“The demand for the high-quality service our associate owners provide gives us the opportunity to reinvest in these communities by acquiring additional sites for Publix stores. We continue to focus on being the premier food retailer in the areas in which we operate,” said Publix CEO, Ed Crenshaw.
Albertson’s operates more than 300 stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas. The company plans to operate its remaining Florida division stores with the ongoing support of its distribution center in Plant City and division office in Lake Mary.
Grand opening dates for all locations will depend on the scope of the remodels. The acquisition will open up a new market area with four stores in Escambia County.
Publix currently operates 936 store locations across the Southeast, with distribution centers in Florida and Georgia. The company currently employs more than 142,000 people and will hold job fairs dedicated to impacted Albertson’s employees in the weeks to come.
