ST. LOUIS — McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. has broken ground on a multi-building project at the east end of Washington University’s Danforth Campus in St. Louis. McCarthy is constructing three new academic buildings, two multi-use pavilions and an underground parking facility. The project also includes a new landscape and an expansion of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Notable components include Anabeth and John Weil Hall, an 82,100-square-foot interdisciplinary building that will serve as the new front door to the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. The majority of the construction is slated for completion prior to spring 2019 commencement.

SCHILLER PARK, ILL. — PREMIER Design + Build Group LLC will construct a 157,525-square-foot industrial property in Schiller Park near the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The project will include demolition of a bakery in order to build two separate industrial buildings in its place. Easily accessible to I-294, the property will feature an 84,700-square-foot building and a 72,825-square-foot building. Both facilities will feature 32-foot clear heights, truck courts, loading docks, ESFR sprinklers and retention ponds. Each building will be able to accommodate multiple tenants. Mark Melone, Christopher Kiziak and Zach Gadomski of PREMIER are responsible for the project. Cornerstone will provide architectural services, and Swift Structural Design and Knight Engineering will provide engineering expertise. Bridge Development Partners is the developer. The project will be completed by the end of the second quarter this year.

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. — National Realty & Development Corp. (NRDC) has signed the first anchor tenants at The Shoppes at Middletown, a retail development in Middletown. A 130,000-square-foot Wegmans Food Markets store and a 26,530-square-foot, six-screen CMX, The VIP Cinema Experience will join the 340,000-square-foot development. When complete, The Shoppes at Middletown will include national, regional and local retailers and restaurants. The project is located on Route 35 at its intersection with Kings Highway East in eastern Monmouth County.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — VanTrust Real Estate has commenced construction on a new building at Northgate Distribution Center in North Las Vegas. The 170-acre site is located at 4410-4490 Nexus Way. This is the fifth of eight buildings VanTrust intends to erect on the site, which will eventually feature 3.2 million square feet of distribution space. This building is scheduled for completion by December. Martin Harris Contracting is building the property, which HPA Architecture designed.

GRAND RAPIDS AND LANSING, MICH. — Wolverine Building Group is constructing two apartment properties totaling 718,000 square feet in Michigan. Georgia-based Rise Real Estate is the developer. Skyvue Apartments is a 418,000-square-foot mixed-use development located in downtown Lansing. The $65 million project began with the demolition of a former car dealership. The property will include 338 units with a mix of one-, two- and four-bedroom units. Amenities include a sky view lounge, outdoor pool and fitness center. The building will also feature more than 4,000 square feet of commercial space for future build-out. Construction began in November 2015 and is slated for completion in July. The Brix at Midtown is located in downtown Grand Rapids. Comprising two buildings and 300,000 square feet, the property will feature 287 apartment units. Amenities include a clubhouse, fitness center, swimming pool, courtyards and dog parks. Construction began in April 2016 and is slated for completion this November.

HOWELL, MICH. — MedCraft Healthcare Real Estate LLC has completed development of the Ascension Medical Center in Howell, approximately 30 miles north of Ann Arbor. The $13.5 million, 60,000-square-foot outpatient facility is located at the Latson Road exit on I-96. The new center will offer primary care services of family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. Specialties include cardiology, pulmonology and audiology. Other services include diagnostic imaging (with 3-D mammography), lab, physical therapy and occupational health. The center is also home to an urgent care that will be open seven days a week for 10 hours per day. Diekema Hamann provided architectural and engineering services, while the CSM Group provided construction services.

ORANGE CITY, IOWA — The Opus Group has begun construction of a new 61,750-square-foot Health and Natural Sciences building at Northwestern College in Orange City. The building will be the new home of the school’s biology, chemistry and nursing departments. The project will include lab spaces, featuring simulation suites that replicate hospital and clinical settings for nursing students. Additional classrooms will include moveable tables and exam rooms to allow for hands-on training. The building will also feature energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, including a specialized cooling system that makes ice overnight when utility rates are lower and uses the ice to cool the facility throughout the day. The building is slated for completion in summer 2018. Opus Design Build LLC is the construction manager for the project, HGA is the design architect and Cannon Moss Brygger Architects is the architect of record.

ITHACA, N.Y. — EdR has begun construction on a new on-campus housing project at Cornell University. The Maplewood Graduate and Professional Student Housing complex will feature 872 beds in 441 units, a playground for children, a community center, study areas and Wi-Fi. The 15-acre project is set to open in August 2018 with a mix of townhouses and apartments.

SPRING VALLEY, CALIF. — Covenant Retirement Communities has opened Peterson Life Center, a $19.1 million expansion at Mount Miguel Covenant Village in the San Diego suburb of Spring Valley. The Peterson Life Center will serve as a hub for Mount Miguel’s 400-plus residents. The property features an enclosed courtyard, three dining venues, an art studio and gallery, library, wellness center and fitness studio, outdoor pool with two lap lanes, a hot tub, and locker rooms. For entertainment and social gatherings, there’s a 24-seat movie theater, game and billiards room, kids’ corner for visiting children and more. Construction for the 33,082 square-foot, two-story, Spanish-style building started in 2014. Residents at Mount Miguel span the continuum of care. Peterson Life Center is named after Paul Peterson, retired Covenant president and former Mount Miguel administrator. Covenant is the sixth largest nonprofit seniors housing provider, featuring 15 communities in 10 states. It is a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

NASHVILLE, TENN. — Atlanta-based Songy Highroads LLC plans to develop a new 15-story Hyatt House hotel in Nashville. The Hyatt House Nashville West End will be located at the intersection of Hayes Street and 21st Avenue, about a block from Vanderbilt University, Saint Thomas Medical and Centennial Medical Center. Wakefield Beasley & Associates designed the hotel, which will feature Hyatt’s signature H Bar concept and a pool and fitness center on the fifth floor. Songy Highroads and its joint venture partner, an affiliate of Hyatt, plan to deliver the 201-room hotel in early 2019.
