Kansas City Chiefs Unveil Plans for New $3B Stadium, Two Mixed-Use Entertainment Districts in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, KAN. — The Kansas City Chiefs have unveiled plans for a new football stadium, as well as a new training facility and surrounding mixed-use entertainment districts for both projects, in Kansas. These initiatives represent a combined economic impact of approximately $4.4 billion, according to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly. Under the terms of an agreement reached with the state, the Chiefs will relocate from Missouri to a new domed stadium in Wyandotte County, which encompasses the Kansas side of the city. The new stadium, which has a projected cost of about $3 billlion, is expected to open in advance of the 2031 NFL season. ESPN reports that the new stadium will have a seating capacity of about 65,000, which is about 10,000 seats fewer than the team’s current home at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri. The team’s lease at Arrowhead expires after the 2030 season. The exact location of the new stadium was not announced. LDCM Solutions Breaks Ground on $73.9M Academic Project in West El Paso

EL PASO, TEXAS — Locally based general contractor LDCM Solutions has broken ground on Davenport Elementary School, a $73.9 million academic project in El Paso. Designed by Pfluger Architects with construction administration by Carl Daniel Architects, the school is part of the Canutillo Independent School District (ISD) and is located in the Enchanted Hills subdivision on the city’s west side. Davenport Elementary School will have 36 classrooms for prekindergarten through fifth grade students, as well as collaborative learning spaces, a gymnasium, library, cafeteria and outdoor learning and collaboration areas. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

Torcon Completes $35M Academic Project in Central New Jersey

TRENTON AND EWING, N.J. — General contractor and construction management firm Torcon Inc. has completed the Paul Robeson Charter School, a $35 million academic project in Central New Jersey. The site is a formerly vacant lot that lies at the nexus of the communities of Trenton and Ewing. The school, which spans 55,000 square feet and can support about 750 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, features 38 classrooms, science labs, elective spaces, administrative offices and academic support areas. Project partners included Atkin Olshin Schade Architects Inc., Aegis Property Group, Bala Consulting Engineers and structural engineer O’Donnell & Naccarato.

Kraus-Anderson Completes Trails, Landscape Rehab at Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota

TWO HARBORS, MINN. — Kraus-Anderson has completed a trails and landscape renovation at Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors along Lake Superior. Designed by Quinn Evans, the project returns circulation patterns to their historic locations with modifications for accessibility needs of the site, including a new ADA ramp, a precast boardwalk that follows the path of the original tramway, structural components and new fencing. The site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2011. The Minnesota Historical Society directed archeological efforts. The lighthouse remained open to the public during the majority of construction, which began in May. Split Rock Light Station was completed in 1910, and for half a century it helped freighters carry freshly mined ore from Minnesota’s Iron Range. The State of Minnesota obtained the historic and scenic landmark in 1971 and transferred administrative responsibility for the 25-acre Split Rock Lighthouse historic site to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1976. The historic core has been restored to its early 1920s appearance. The project was made possible by the people of Minnesota through an appropriation made by the Minnesota Legislature and approved by the governor.

McHugh Construction, Nacional Group Break Ground on $85M Wagner Community Center in Metro Chicago

ELMHURST, ILL. — McHugh Construction and joint venture partner Nacional Group have broken ground on the new Joanne B. Wagner Community Center in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst. The nearly $85 million project will replace the former 32,000-square-foot Wagner Community Center with a 127,250-square-foot, two-story facility at 615 N. West Ave. A grand opening is planned for fall 2027. The new center will be approximately four times larger than the former facility, enabling expanded programming and the elimination of longstanding waitlists for youth and adult activities. Designed by the Elmhurst office of Dewberry, the Wagner Community Center will feature an indoor artificial turf field, a full-size gymnasium capable of hosting multiple sports, a three-lane elevated walking track, dedicated early childhood and preschool classrooms with a separate entrance, expanded dance and gymnastics studios, an indoor play area, multipurpose community rooms and administrative offices.

The project will transform the former William Howard Taft School in the city’s Eastwood neighborhood, which opened in 1907 and closed in 1964, into a 28-unit rental complex. The unit mix will comprise six one-bedroom residences and 22 two-bedroom apartments. The developer is Skinner Properties.

The project that will convert a 105-year-old building that formerly housed a car dealership into the new COMCARE Community Crisis Center (CCC). The development will expand access to mental health services and consolidate the county’s services into a single building adjacent to the new Wichita Biomedical Campus (WBC). Helix Architecture + Design is leading the transformation. Helix is also part of the architecture and interiors team, along with CO Architects, for the WBC, a joint initiative of the University of Kansas Medical Center, Wichita State University and WSU Tech to establish a regional health sciences educational hub. Once operational, the CCC will offer WBC students hands-on clinical mental health training and possible career internships. The building will transition COMCARE, a certified community behavioral health clinic, from a residential facility to a new level of care as a crisis intervention center (CIC), providing stabilization services to those with more serious mental health needs. Bobcat Stadium, located on the university’s San Marcos campus, will receive a new upper-level hospitality and banquet space, as well as new exterior concourses. KANSAS CITY, MO. — The Kansas City Aviation Department has selected Airside Innovation Missouri LLC, a joint venture between Kansas City natives Kyle Eiserer of Airside FBO and Erik Murray of Eastside Innovation, to develop the last 20 acres of available land at the Kansas City Downtown Airport – Wheeler Field. The $55 million development will include a new fixed base operation (FBO) led by Kansas City-based Apex Aero Center with a 15,000-square-foot terminal building and more than 150,000 square feet of new hangar, office and shop space designed to serve business, government and general aviation users. FBOs are often the first point of contact for visitors arriving by air. Known as Project Lima, the development was selected through a request for proposals process and received unanimous approval from the Kansas City Council in September. The developers executed a long-term lease on the property last month. The project will also include the expansion of Red Tail Academy, a Kansas City-based nonprofit focused on educating and mentoring underrepresented youth in aviation. The two-story project at 4401 W. 76th St. replaces the former facility on York Avenue. Designed by BKV Group, the 35,464-square-foot development also includes space for the Public Health Division. The fire station features an atrium and lobby, administration areas, training rooms, offices, conference rooms and a large apparatus bay for ambulances, fire and rescue vehicles as well as personal protective equipment storage. The building also features a physical conditioning room that is available to all city employees. The second floor houses dormitories, and the training tower rises five stories. Construction began in fall 2023.

Kansas Children’s Discovery Center Opens $11.6M Addition in Topeka

TOPEKA, KAN. — The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, Topeka’s nonprofit children’s museum, has opened an $11.6 million expansion project that more than doubled the size of the facility from 15,000 to over 30,000 square feet. The expansion includes three large gallery spaces, three learning lab classrooms, a makerspace, café, exhibit construction workshop and other spaces. The Sunflower Gallery is anchored by an indoor climbing structure, the tallest climbable sunflower in the world at two stories tall, according to a release. Surrounding the climber, visitors will find educational exhibits celebrating Kansas symbols. The gallery also features murals by local artist Sarah O’Keefe, Queren King Orozco and children from Shawnee Heights Elementary School. The Hall of Bright Ideas celebrates creative Kansans, including historical inventors and Kansas children. The gallery includes an art installation, hand-cranked generator, illumination station and children’s stage. A 3,000-square-foot traveling exhibit gallery enables the museum to host any traveling exhibit from around the country. WACO, TEXAS — The City of Waco has unveiled plans for a $1.4 billion redevelopment of its downtown area. The project is a 12- to 20-year initiative that spans five districts and more than 100 acres along the Brazos River. Key components will include the development of a new building that will jointly house the operations of Waco City Hall and the Waco Independent School District. The plan also encompasses a new convention center, performing arts venue, town square/central events lawn, ballpark and enhanced green spaces. CLOQUET, MINN. — Kraus-Anderson Construction has broken ground on a new $18.9 million fire and ambulance headquarters serving the Cloquet Area Fire District in Cloquet, a city in northeastern Minnesota. Designed by LHB Architects, the 35,700-square-foot facility will feature an eight-stall apparatus bay for ambulance, fire and rescue vehicles and equipment. The building will house a two-story administrative and dormitory area, training tower and elevator. The first floor will include offices, conference rooms, a training room, fitness room and personal protective equipment storage.
